About the Artist: Ana González Barragán (b. Mexico City, 1989) is an artist and researcher focused on the histories — cultural, geological, and political — of different stones and minerals. Working in obsidian, marble, and other materials with long aesthetic traditions, González Barragán creates sculptural objects and installations that explore and amplify the metaphoric potential of geologic bodies, paying careful attention to their own complex histories, detectable in veins, cracks, and gradations of tone. In her practice, González Barragán also uses time-based media and oral history-taking to register the extractive (and often violent and exploitative) processes long associated with these materials, from the gender politics and labor practices of mining to the ecological impacts of industrial capitalism.

CultureHop: Kimberley Faber Studio
Culture Club Member Event
For this week’s CultureHop, Culture Club Members will be hopping over to local artist Kimberly Faber’s studio for a tour and inside look at her artistic process and stunning work.
Artist Statement: With concept as priority, I offer subversive examples of societal “norms” and expectations, highlighting the inherent absurdism of the structures that hold us in place. My working concepts often come into being through preoccupation with and examination of elements of the collective experience that I find peculiar. Finding the root in an inversion of the norm, a hypocrisy, the associated slang and idioms, or even a surprising element of preliminary research, I then develop these working concepts through extensive research and inquiry as I seek the patterns, consistencies, and gaps within experiences that appear, at surface, to be universal, but in reality, are not. These develop into something of a theory and challenge to what we believe we know to be true, resulting in a tension that cannot always be contained within the frame, one that most often requires a viewer.

CultureHop: Raquelitas Tortillas
For this week’s CultureHop, Culture Club Members will be hopping over to Raquelitas Tortillas for a special behind the scenes tour. Raquelitas Tortillas is a staple of Denver’s culinary scene known for its high-quality, locally made tortillas. About the business: We're Colorado’s first, original tortilla factory, rooted in tradition since 1960. We’re committed to sustainability, using 100% wind and solar power, and recycling 95% of our food processing waste. Our tortillas and chips are crafted with locally sourced ingredients, supporting Colorado's farmers and the local economy. From classic options to unique flavors like Pueblo Green Chile, Bison Tallow, and Hibiscus, our products offer a superior taste and texture that elevate any dish. Still family owned and operated, we blend tradition with innovation to bring you the best tortillas and chips you’ll ever taste. We exist, still after 60 years, with only one goal. We don't have any interest at being the biggest tortilla maker - simply the best.

For this week’s CultureHop, Culture Club Members will be hopping over to Leon Gallery to see the current exhibition The Peace Found by artist Fitz Lewis and to hear from gallery owner’s Eric Nord and Eric Dallimore about running one of Denver’s greatest non-profit galleries.
About the Artist: Fitz Joseph Lewis (they/them) (b. 1983, Mark Joseph Fitzsimmons, Kansas City, Mo.) is a Denver based interdisciplinary conceptual and artist. The artist asks what we value - the object or the action; the symbol or what the symbol represents. Influenced by their history of violence, Lewis plays with the humble materials that permeated their abusive childhood and time in combat zones. The work is an outcome of the artist deconstructing and healing from the values that were violently instilled within them.

The space brings together a venue, artist studios, and a recording studio, while also offering support through booking, management, and consulting services. Trujillo, a queer Chicana with a rich background in radio, talent buying, visual arts, and community collaboration, envisioned Manos Sagrados as a safe, intentional space for BIPOC, femme, 2SLGBTQ+, and disabled communities to thrive creatively. The name, meaning "sacred hands," was inspired by a traditional Indigenous cleansing, symbolizing the balance of creativity, identity, and community.
